Nonsurgical Treatments for Spinal Stenosis

In the absence of severe or progressive nerve involvement, your doctor may decide to pursue on the the following conservative (nonsurgical) treatments:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or naproxen, to reduce inflammation and relieve pain
  • Analgesics, such as acetaminophen, to relive pain
  • Corticosteroid injections into the outermost membrane of the spinal cord and nerve roots to reduce inflammation and treat acute pain locally
  • Anesthetic injections (nerve blocks) near the affected nerve to temporarily relieve pain
  • Restricted activity depending on the extent of nerve involvement
  • Physical therapy to maintain motion, strengthen abdominal and back muscles, and build endurance
  • Lumbar corset or brace to provide support and help regain mobility
